决明子为一年生半灌木状草本；决明花黄色，荚果细长，四棱柱形；小决明植株较小，荚果较短。以其有明目之功而名之。决明子味苦、甘、咸，性微寒，入肝、肾、大肠经；润肠通便，降脂明目，治疗便秘及高血脂，高血压。清肝明目，利水通便，有缓泻作用，降血压降血脂。
草决明为一年生、直立、粗壮草本，高1～2米。偶数羽状复叶，长4～8厘米，叶柄上无腺体，叶铀上每 对小叶间有棒状的腺体1枚，小叶3对，纸质，倒心形或倒卵状长椭圆形，长2～6厘米，宽1.5～2.5厘米，顶端钝而有小尖头，基部渐狭，偏斜，两面被柔毛，小叶柄长1.5～2毫米，托叶线形，被柔毛，早落。花盛夏开放，腋生，通常2朵聚生，总梗长6～10毫米，花梗长1～1.5厘米，丝状，萼片5枚，膜质，下部合生成短管，外面被柔毛，长约8毫米，花瓣5，黄色，下面二片略长，发育雄蕊7枚，子房无柄，被白色柔毛。荚果纤细，近线形，有四直棱，两端渐尖，长达5厘米，宽3～4毫米，种子菱形，光亮。
该品略呈四方形或短圆柱形，两端近平行，稍倾斜，长3～7毫米，宽2～4毫米，绿棕色或暗棕色，平滑有光泽，背腹面各有1条突起的棱线，棱线两侧各有1条淡黄色的线形凹纹；质坚硬，不易破碎。横切面可见薄的种皮和2片3形折曲的黄色子叶。气微，味微苦。以颗粒饱满、色绿棕者为佳。

清热明目，润肠通便。用于目赤涩痛，羞明多泪，头痛眩晕，目暗不明，大便秘结。归肝、肾、大肠经。有减肥之功效。治风热赤眼，青盲，雀目，高血压，肝炎，肝硬化腹水，习惯性便秘。
